DMC: "Brave Outing, May 2020" by Janet Clare Fagal

BRAVE OUTING, MAY 2020

I sip my tea, munch a biscotti
watch lake water gleam under
a bright spring sky.
People in pairs walk by, chatting briskly.
A young girl runs back and forth
at water’s edge.
Her smile brighter than today’s sun.
A reminder of childhood’s innocence,
a longer distance between her and her future
compared to me and mine.  I step from the car,
adjust my mask, venture out into foreign fresh air.
Taking a cue from this child, I
inhale as best I can,
and pray for the cleansing and freedom we need.

  1. Thank you for the breath of fresh air your poem brought me today, Janet. It sounds familiar, except for the part about the lake— I wish! Caution and baby steps all the way.

    1. Thanks, Michelle. Thanks for sharing my poem! Means a lot. Our village is on a Finger Lake. I am blessed. We have a lot of snow that's for sure, but we also have some really gorgeous areas. I like to just park lakeside every so often so I never take it for granted how lucky I am.

  2. Just lovely, Janet.
I like the shift from the car to the air. Brave words without saying so except for the wink in the title.

    You showed. Not told.

Follow those dreams and renew the air we breathe. Not just physical air. The air of innocence.

    So nice!

    1. Thank you, Pamela. You know I appreciate your words. It was a brave move, to just get out of that car and walk a little.

    2. Skanny? Oh I know why!
      Teacher: Is “showed” a word?
Writing is brave. Posting is brave.

  3. Such a sweet capture of a time so needed, Janet. It brings goodness even as it brings us to this time. Thank you!

    1. Thanks so much, Linda. These moments could pass but for poetry and the need to capture what something so seemingly simply can mean.......the child reminded me of one of yours......

    1. We have to keep going. Poetry helps. Breathing, essential. And nature. We can never forget how the great outdoors can heal.
