Dylan T. for Dylan B.

G.Hüdepohl (atacamaphoto.com)/ESO

Sharing this video and excerpt from Dylan Thomas' essay "Notes on the Art of Poetry" in honor of my Dylan, who casts his own "delight and glory and oddity and light."

Happy 16th birthday, Sweetheart!

Notes on the Art of Poetry
     ~ Dylan Thomas, 1951

I could never have dreamt that there were such goings-on
in the world between the covers of books,
such sandstorms and ice-blasts of words...
such staggering peace, such enormous laughter,
such and so many blinding bright lights...
splashing all over the pages
in a million bits and pieces
all of which were words, words, words,
and each of which were alive forever
in its own delight and glory and oddity and light.

DMC: "Somewhere Between Night and Day" by Alayne Kay Christian

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN NIGHT AND DAY

As the morning light steals the night
A new day is on the horizon
I am drawn to the eastern sky

In complete silence
The bright morning star calls to me
I am one with the Universe
Of this I am never more certain than
Somewhere between night and day

Night Whispers

Earth's horizon as the Sun sets over the Pacific Ocean (NASA)

I'm taking advantage of a lull in letter poems to share my first attempt at a pantoum.  I was inspired to write one for two reasons: first and foremost, to honor my friend Jan Gars whose untimely death has left me shocked and saddened; and secondly, to participate in Laura Shovan's month-long challenge to write poetry based on sound clip prompts.  For a full description of Laura's project and how to participate, please visit her blog, Author Amok.  Laura was kind enough to include my recommendation of this video – a sampling of electromagnetic vibrations recorded by NASA Voyager:

Night Whispers

for Jan Gars

Whispers from the shadowed night
Lonely winds of time and space
One more poem yet to write
Trapped in gravity’s embrace

Lonely winds of time and space
Glowing embers, pulsing light
Trapped in gravity’s embrace
Before the blackness turns to white

Glowing embers, pulsing light,
Like eyes behind a clouded face
Before the blackness turns to white
Before you find your resting place

Like eyes behind a clouded face
There’s one more poem yet to write
Before you find your resting place
And whisper from the shadowed night.

DMC: "Hush, Little Martian" by Carrie Clickard

Based on the traditional lullaby, "Hush, Little Baby."

Hush, little Martian, don't flap a wing,
Mama's gonna give you a radar ring.

And if that ring won't work in fog,
Papa's gonna buy you an android dog.

And if that android dog won't bark,
Mama's got a pass for the Milky Way park.

And if the Milky Way runs dry,
Papa's gonna build you a saucer to fly.

And if that saucer hits the sun,
Mama's gonna buy you a laser gun.

And if that laser never shoots,
Papa's gonna buy you some rocket boots.

And if those boots won't reach a star,
We'll stop by Earth and buy a car.
