DMC: "Presence of Tree" by Michelle Kogan
PRESENCE OF TREE
I am tree…
I rise two stories and more
I have thirty plus years
I watch over windows
I reach into sky
I love all seasons, but
Spring awakens joy in me…
My little green buds begin emerging
My leaves climb out and winged seeds shoot up
Birds sit in my branches: sparrows, robins, and cardinals
An artist watches me,
Sometimes she sketches me.
Sun graces me and
Clouds shelter me
I… am… tree…
I am River birch
I am here for you
Come be with me…

DMC: "Come Future" by Michelle Kogan
COME FUTURE
Come to me future
Come to me now
through this tainted
coronavirus time
Conjure up mystery–
Let my mind slip in between
imagination and land
gently with wonder
Let us walk together welcoming human compassion
like we’ve never seen before
Let us become our earth’s eager caretakers
like we’ve never been before
Let us hold education up high offering her
to all wanting hearts with equal access
Let us wrap our healthcare warmly around all
shoulders within reach of each individual
Let us embrace and honor our diversities,
and school naysayers with compassion
Let us support and encourage creative arts
for all to participate, enrich in, and grow
Let altruistic acts of humanity run rampant,
become common place, and cherished
Let us breathe in hope,
and breathe out possibility
In depths of despair and darkness of humanity,
remind us to breathe, remember, and dream our passions…
Come to me future
Come to me now

DMC: "A Kid Forever More" by Michelle Kogan
A KID FOREVER MORE
Be a kid
right now,
this minute–
Nuh-uh you say,
you wanna be
like everyone else,
all grown up.
But now’s the time
to be yourself–
Silly, smart, sassy,
sashaying across a sun-warmed street…
Meek, mellow, musical,
mumbling melodramatic moments…
Seize the opportunity,
follow your passion,
indulge in your daydreams…
Time flies by, and before you know it–
Even grownups wish they could
be a kid
forever
more.

DMC: "Spring ... Watch and Listen" by Michelle Kogan
SPRING ... WATCH AND LISTEN
Yesterday I watched and
listened to you through
my window.
Today I opened my door,
we were so close as
I watched and listened …
Robins–Trilling, trailing,
cherry, cherup, cheruping.
Cardinals fluttering through soft fluffs
of lightest pink and dots of emerald.
A background canvas-canopy
filled with constant song,
with individual voices
singing their own songs.
My eye searching for
whichever one of you–
Ah–You King Cardinal–
Hopping so surely, securely,
a pair of feet perfectly synced.
Red beak beaming through a framed
mask of jet-black feathers …
Looking, cocking, searching for–
Seeds–bedding–me to move–
Leaving me to look up, watch and listen …

DMC: "Ode to Spring Soil" by Michelle Kogan
ODE TO SPRING SOIL
You feel soft and squishy, as her
shoes ooze over with clumps of your midnight mix.
Your earthy scent magnifies, as she moves toward you.
Swish, her foot slips and she sloshes down,
sliding to the ground; savoring your richness between her wet lips.
Why have you softened so early? Spring Soil,
for centering and slowing her, before the rush of summer.

Write five lines about the object, using a different sense in each line (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell). Then ask the object a question, listen for its answer, and write the question, the answer, or both.Click HERE to read her sample poem, "Ode to a River."

| MICHELLE KOGAN |
Michelle Kogan is a painter, instructor, illustrator, and writer creating colorful figure, flora and fauna paintings, and children’s illustrations. The paintings often include urban settings and have a sensitivity to endangered species and the environment. She is an instructor at the Evanston Art Center, where she teaches figure drawing and painting, 2-D drawing classes, and plein air watercolor. She also offers plein air workshops at nature venues in the Chicago area, including the Lincoln Park Conservatory, Lurie Gardens in Millennium Park, and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
Michelle is no stranger to the Ditty of the Month Club. She contributes regularly to DMC challenges with poetry, and sometimes with art, as well. Her poem "Toady" will be included in The Best of Today's Little Ditty, 2014-2015. Michelle first came to Today's Little Ditty with the deeper wisdom challenge in January 2015. She wooed me with watercolor (an illustrated tanka) a couple of months after that. Inspired to visit her Etsy shop where she sells archival prints, paintings, greeting cards, journals and sketchbooks, I became irrevocably smitten.
I've asked Michelle if she wouldn't mind answering a few questions so that you, too, can get to know her and her artistry.

Tell us about your artistic background. Were you walking around with a sketchbook as a child?
I’ve always been creating art. I grew up with art around me. My mother is an artist and has always encouraged my art pursuits. As a young child, I was curious about everything, and sometimes I would take things apart to figure out how they worked. I had so many ideas and questions, my mom often asked me where they all came from. By high school I packed in as much art as I could and was drawing constantly in all sizes of sketchbooks. I had a hankering to find out more about art and artists, and began visiting Chicago museums and galleries with friends and on my own. The question of what do I want to be never entered my mind—I knew from the time I was a teenager I had to be an artist. My passion became my career when I studied art in college. Beginning at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and finishing with my MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University.
What turns you on, artistically speaking?
Drawing–painting and playing with color takes me to another realm. I’ve always been keen on nature, critters, flora, and our human relationship with them. I was a big reader as a child, and a storyteller early on, too. When I recognized these core interests, critters, flora, concerns for our environment, and story, my art took on its own visual voice.

You often combine painting with poetry. What, for you, is the relationship between the two? Which comes first—the art or the words?
My art and poetry are inspired by each other, along with nature, and walks I take. If you went on a walk with me, we’d walk for a while and then something would catch my eye and I’d want to stop and sketch or write . . . and sometimes both. Way back, maybe ten years ago, I revisited writing children’s stories. Then I thought, why aren’t I writing poetry? I was always fond of it. I began with haiku, writing them constantly, but that wasn’t enough. I sought more genres and blogs that featured poetry, and now I’m challenged with balancing the writing with art because I’m writing all the time.

As a teacher, what is the main thing you would like students to take away from your classes?
I want students to catch the art bug—to be so drawn and inspired by art and art-making that they can’t get enough of creating it and taking it in.
Tell us where we can see more of your work.
There are a handful of places you can view my art: Studio b. gallery, in Three Oaks, MI, the book City Creatures, Animal Encounters in the Chicago Wilderness, and online at my website www.michellekogan.com, my blog www.moreartforall.wordpress.com, my Etsy Shop www.MichelleKoganFineArt.etsy.com, and on Facebook and Instagram (mkogancreate).
Thanks so much, Michelle. It's an honor to have your art on the cover of The Best of Today's Little Ditty, 2014-2015.

DMC: "Madame de Pompadour" by Michelle Kogan
![]() |
| Madame de Pompadour, portrait by François Boucher |
MADAME DE POMPADOUR
Come closer dear and sit beside
my lyrical harpsichord.
An interruption never you,
with music we both adore.
The keys will dance around the room,
enrapturing our senses–
music only nightingales sing,
without any pretenses.
You’re whispering my confidant...
My play, yes I’m preparing;
there’s nymphs, gods, and enrapturement,
tis light and not despairing.
Oh yes, dear king, I’m engraving,
a secret gemstone for you.
A precious stone fit for my love,
and our private rendezvous.

DMC: "Unpretentious Pencil" – poem and sketch by Michelle Kogan
![]() |
| © 2016 Michelle Kogan |
Pencils peering out
waiting patiently for
their purpose, or a
person’s poppycock to
not so pleasingly pour
out… But wait there’s more,
those indescribable
words winding off their points,
even poppycock might
please an unpretentious
pencil. And still more…
The sketch that dances off
the tip, sends the tool
into a tizzy for
an eternity, till…
Exhausted, pencil
rests, catches breath, and waits
again patiently,
with fellow pencils to
be discovered once more…

DMC: "Mystified Mango" by Michelle Kogan
MYSTIFIED MANGO
A fruity girl from Chicago
Loved mango, though not to swallow.
But sweet as she’d be
He wouldn’t love she
Mango rolled over to Margo!
The Chicago girl wouldn’t give up
She thought neglect might fill his cup,
Keeping her distance
Changed his resistance
Mango loves Chicago girl yup!

DMC: "Toady" by Michelle Kogan
TOADY
Toady,
sure wish
I left you
where you
belong...
But you fit
perfectly
in my small,
cupped,
hand
you felt squishy,
and warm,
and wet,
all at
once
and your breath
poked
around
inside my
but,
my heart broke
when your
breath drifted
away...
Our
ceremony
in your
memory
helped,
but the
lump in my
throat
felt like
forever...

DMC: "My Treeless Tree House" by Michelle Kogan
My Treeless Tree House
My treeless tree house whirr is under construction.
Watch out dear critters for flying sawdust fluxion.
The fence will fill in fine for my tree substitute.

When finished I’ll invite my friend with a feather.
Tada! My house is done its rustic and breezy,
Climb up, take in the vista, and take it eeeasy...

DMC: "Dear Frozen February" by Michelle Kogan
Dear Frozen February,
Bundled so barely my eyes see,
bright rays met me on my walk, where
I spied some beaming red berries.
Baby steps traversed across the
sparkling tundra, eyes tearing
trudging through snowy scenery...
Bouncing steps joyfully captured
my eye a distance ahead, while
swaying mirthfully, undisturbed.
Above the snow covered birches,
finally, the sweet chirping din
of sparrows scouring branches.
Searching for their shape, ones undone,
for a moment, and stored in my
memories imagination.
Most humbly yours,
Explorer of the outdoors
