DMC: "Ascend" by Damon Dean
ASCEND
Ascending
beyond clouds
determined eagles fly,
gathering high intent.
Jeopardy, karma, life
might not observe peace.
Quietly
raptors sweep
toward uneasy victims.
Watch,
examine
your
zeniths.

Click HERE to read this month's interview with Carole Boston Weatherford. She has challenged us to write an abecedarian poem.
Generally each line (or word) of an abecedarian poem begins with A and continues in alphabetical order until you reach Z. For this challenge, you may start and end with whichever letters you choose, as long as they are sequential.
Post your poem on our September 2017 padlet. While some contributions will be featured as daily ditties this month, all contributions will be included in a wrap-up celebration on Friday, September 29th. One lucky participant will win a copy of Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Eric Velasquez (Candlewick Press, 2017).

DMC: "Dear Sir Roly-Poly" by Damon Dean
In February 2015, David Elliott challenged us to write letter poems to a bird, animal, or other object of our choice. He suggested we research our topic, no matter how familiar we were with it, in order to bring a little-known fact or unique angle to our work. Here is Damon Dean's terrific response to that challenge. You'll also find it in The Best of Today's Little Ditty: 2014-2015. Come back tomorrow to see what David has been up to lately!
Dear Sir Roly-Poly,
I thank you for your inquiry
about your pedigree.
Regretfully, appearances
belie your family tree.
I've turned most every leaf and stone.
My research seems to say—
you're not a bug at all! Not
in the "insect" sort of way.
Instead you are crustacean!
(Your kin are water-bound,
so how you came to live on land—
that fact I've not yet found.)
Some further facts are needed. More
ancestry should be followed.
But meanwhile I should caution you—
don't let yourself be swallowed.
Your rolling-up ability
("conglobulation" skill)
could cause some sickly creature to
mistake you for a pill.
Sincerely,
Professor O. Possum

DMC: "Paws" by Damon Dean
PAWS
First,
tap-tap-tap-tap-tap
on morning’s bedroom floor,
impatience played
between long stretches, yawns.
Then
scratch-scratch-scratch-scratch-scratch,
the tugs at bedside covers
pull my sheets,
beg for me to peek
—at least one eye—
to see a wide-eyed plea.
Next
rat-tat-tat-tat-tat
claws celebrate surrender.
Though reluctant,
I arise and stumble to the backyard door
in early-dark,
accompanied by staccato joy.
A caesura, fermata—a pause.
Then,
my slow wake,
my long-drawn-out capitulated yawn
breaks short at
sudden rhythms,
scrape-scrape-scrape-scrape-scrape,
wood-scarring pleads
upon the door.
I let them in,
all four percussion-gifted paws.
My day begins
with music
to my
ears.
