DMC: "Ascend" by Damon Dean

ASCEND

Ascending
beyond clouds
determined eagles fly,
gathering high intent.

Jeopardy, karma, life
might not observe peace.

Quietly
raptors sweep
toward uneasy victims.

Watch,
examine
your
zeniths.

Click HERE to read this month's interview with Carole Boston Weatherford. She has challenged us to write an abecedarian poem.

Generally each line (or word) of an abecedarian poem begins with A and continues in alphabetical order until you reach Z. For this challenge, you may start and end with whichever letters you choose, as long as they are sequential.

Post your poem on our September 2017 padlet. While some contributions will be featured as daily ditties this month, all contributions will be included in a wrap-up celebration on Friday, September 29th. One lucky participant will win a copy of Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Eric Velasquez (Candlewick Press, 2017).

  1. Wow.

I'm going to quote the verse that shakes me up -
    "Quietly
    raptors sweep
    toward uneasy victims,"

on the next evening walk with my hubby.
It's exactly what the owls & falcons (could be hawks)
    do before our very eyes.

Carole Boston Weatherford's bat cave poem & this set one the bar high for the September ditty challenge!

  2. Glad you liked it Jan! Love watching raptor circle in the skies and often wondered what it would feel like to be a field mouse, scurrying and worrying about my grassy cover.

  4. I'm impressed not only with this terrific poem, Damon, but how quickly you got it to me. Your muse must be as determined as those eagles!

A fan of the raptor (as is a kid or two at my school--will share with their teachers!).

  11. This works so incredibly well. I would never have thought to write an abecedarian about an eagle.
