DMC: A cherita by Diane Mayr

in school I learned

spontaneous generation
is an erroneous theory

why then, each August,
do fruit flies appear to
tease awake my primal brain?

Click HERE to read this month's interview with Naomi Shihab Nye. Her DMC challenge is to write a letter to yourself in which you ask some questions that you don't have to answer. (Please keep in mind that your poem does not need to be in standard letter form.)

Post your poem on our September 2018 padlet. While some contributions will be featured as daily ditties this month, all contributions will be included in a wrap-up presentation on Friday, September 28th, and one lucky participant will win a personalized copy of her latest collection of poetry from Greenwillow Books:

    1. I have two cider vinegar traps going now. This has been a crazy fruit fly year, thus the poem!

  2. So funny and so true, Diane! I really appreciated your approach to this challenge. I've been trying a number of ways to incorporate questions, but haven't yet found an approach that doesn't feel forced. You make it look easy!

    1. The secret is not to look to incorporate questions, but to pick only one!

  3. Diane, you've opened up another way to look at this challenge, and as Michelle said, made it look easy. Now you have me researching fruit flies!

    1. I've done research before, and written a poem about fruit flies before! They're a continuing summer challenge!

  4. Fun poem Diane, you've awakened my "primal brain" with your cherita! And thanks to you and Rebekah of reminding me to put out some apple cider vinegar.

(And I did not know about this apple cider vinegar trick--will have to try it!)

    1. An empty spice jar works best for me since it is small. I've been using the paper cone method since its takes 30 seconds to assemble! There are instructions here. I don't even bother with glue since you can tightly push the cone into the mouth of the vessel (an empty spice jar works great and is small).
