Click HERE to read this month's interview with Carole Boston Weatherford. She has challenged us to write an abecedarian poem.

Generally each line (or word) of an abecedarian poem begins with A and continues in alphabetical order until you reach Z. For this challenge, you may start and end with whichever letters you choose, as long as they are sequential.

Post your poem on our September 2017 padlet. While some contributions will be featured as daily ditties this month, all contributions will be included in a wrap-up celebration on Friday, September 29th. One lucky participant will win a copy of Schomburg: The Man Who Built a Library by Carole Boston Weatherford, illustrated by Eric Velasquez (Candlewick Press, 2017).

  1. Outstanding! Awesome visuals--can not pick my favorite because the images all crack me up--edgy ferrets, obnoxious penguins, moody newts (love the sound of that one especially) great! Picture book in your future? :)

  2. Great fun, Suzy! But I don't know, sounds like a room full of teenagers to me. ;)

  3. Gorgeous images. Like Michelle, I was imagining my classroom of middle-schoolers. And somehow, I really laughed over those 'moody newts'.

  4. Great fun! I am partial to those slovenly toucans (you have a number of them that you have not met in your extended family, Suzy :) )

  5. That is very clever and so much fun. Thanks!

  6. So great! I think my favorites are the knavish llamas. I love the pairing of the silent-letter words. And who doesn't llike llamas?

I could totally see this as an illustrated poster, hanging on a child's bedroom wall. Also...I have a toddler whose third birthday is coming up. Just throwing that out there ;-)

  7. Cute! Well, except for the "slovenly toucans". Nice job, Suzy!
