DMC: "Shelter" by Linda Mitchell

SHELTER

L ike a house of worship

I enter, breathing in calm.

B ooks offer solace when

R eal-life crowds too close.

A seat at lunch cannot give

R efuge from middle school, or

Y ield safety I’ve found in my library.

  1. Ain't that the truth! Thank you for this poem, Linda. It, too, helps me to "breathe in calm."

  2. You've made me remember several scenes in picture and chapter books that show a child using the library for comfort. Those quiet corners are inviting. Love the acrostic, Linda!

  4. Yes, I felt that in the library yesterday.

  5. One of my favorite places. On the technical side, I love how naturally your key letter words fit into the poem. Nothing seems forced to fit your format.

  6. Acrostic is one of those simple forms, like haiku, that are very hard to do well. This one qualifies. A seat, a refuge, a place where you can get lost in a book.

  7. Awwwwww, thanks for the love everyone. I do NOT get enough time for creative writing these days. TLD and Poetry Friday keep my pen nib in the game --- just barely! Looking forward to tomorrow. Creative dreams to each.
