"The cure for anything is salt water-- tears, sweat, or the sea." -Isak Dinesen
Having recently returned from a wonderful week in Beaufort, South Carolina (thanks to Robyn Hood Black for the recommendation)
The Waterfront at Beaufort, SC |
and Cumberland Island, Georgia,
Cumberland Island Beach, Georgia |
I'd like to share five things I learned:
1: Live dolphins are best viewed not through the lens of a camera.

2. On the Pelican Express, there is no caboose.
Pelicans above Hunting Island Beach, Beaufort |
3. Sometimes the best treasures are hidden in plain view...
and sand dollars in 50 and 25 cent pieces are no less valuable.
4. Sometimes the call of the wild is a whisper... so as not to disturb lunch.
Wild horse at Dungeness Ruins, Cumberland Island |
5. You can visit the place, but you must live the adventure.
Drying drenched bottoms on the ferry back to St. Marys |
Walking the half mile from the beach on Cumberland Island to the dock, the sky broke open and we were caught in a torrential downpour. In sodden sneakers, we splashed and splooshed through the six inches of rainwater that quickly flooded the trail.
Drenched, but happy... similar, perhaps, to the boy in this limerick by Liz Steinglass featured on my blog earlier this week. If you haven't seen it yet, please have a look... there are also illustrations by my daughter, Miranda. Then, after you're done there, head over to No Water River, where Renée is hosting this week's Poetry Friday roundup.
So long for now....
Great photos, Michelle! Looks & sounds like you had a wonderful vacation. Liz's limerick is hilarious; from one extreme to the other. And Miranda's illustration complements the poem perfectly. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you, Catherine. I feel lucky to have captured on camera as many memories as I did! ...except for the dolphins, of course. I guess I'll have to rely on my own memory for those slippery critters. Glad you enjoyed my earlier post as well. Thanks for taking the time to check them both out. :)
DeleteIt seems that we just had similar vacations-I so love the ocean! I've been to Cumberland Island with my students! What a great place it was & the beach was incredibly gorgeous! We too saw those wild ponies & that abandoned house, drew so many lovely sketches there. Thanks for sharing all this, Michelle. And I did enjoy Liz's limerick, along with the fabulous illustration!
ReplyDeleteYes, I think we did have very similar vacations, Linda... even the same week! Nice to know you've been to Cumberland Island too-- now I have someone to ooh and ahh with... an unforgettable place to be sure.
DeleteWhat a lovely post. I love the photos and the "lessons." I'll be sure to get Robyn's advice before planning my next trip. :)
ReplyDeleteIf Robyn reads my post this week, she'll be surprised... she didn't even know she was giving me vacation advice! Thanks Liz... and I hope you've been checking out all the nice comments you've been getting on the post from earlier this week!
DeleteBeautiful photos and words to capture the wonder of a vacation. Looks like a lovely and adventurous time!
ReplyDeleteHappy to report it was. :) Thank you, Margaret.
DeleteI agree with everyone else, the photos are lovely. I especially like "Sometimes the best treasures are hidden in plain view..." So true!
ReplyDeleteYes, that line does carry a lot of meaning, doesn't it! Now, if only I could remember to live by those words. Thanks for stopping by today, Linda.
DeleteWhat a wonderful vacation! I love "On the Pelican Express, there is no caboose" I always wondered about that. =)
ReplyDeleteLOL. Glad I could help. ;)
DeleteLove the idea of a salt water cure...
ReplyDeleteMe too! Thanks for stopping by, Mary Lee... enjoy your Sunday.
DeleteHi! I AM finally getting to your post this week, and I'm delighted to find I gave you a vacay recommendation unawares! Where was I on Poetry Friday this week? BEAUFORT! (And Harbor Island.) More on all that later - thank you for sharing all these luscious and fun pictures. (And, hey - even saw a little shark on Friday - an appropriate ending to Shark Week!) :0)
ReplyDeleteWell what do you know! Next time we'll have to coordinate our schedules better. ;) Keep those vacay recommendations coming.
DeleteI love your observations and spirit of adventure in sharing your "blow drying" technique. It's always so much more fun to travel with good sports than cranky folks! I hope you bottled up the salty air to have a bit once to savor once you got home!
ReplyDeleteI think it helped that we went into the day knowing that at some point we'd probably get rained on. When it eventually did happen, we were just so grateful it had held off as long as it had! Not sure I brought much salty air back with us, but the smell of musty sneakers? Most definitely.
DeleteYes! Lots of hidden treasures. I've been in that part of the country and love the beaches. Fun photos.
