DMC: "Sometimes a Happy Ending" by Linda Baie

SOMETIMES A HAPPY ENDING

Joy moved away one cloudy day
and broke my heart in two.
I lay upon the pile of trash
wondering what to do
without the snuggling
and all that hugging,
without that happy you.

Then Joy returned in two large hands
when the trash truck  came along.
No longer left a lonely soul,
you sang a sweet, sweet song
of coming bliss,
a daughter’s kiss.
Joy turned right from wrong.

  1. I confess, I do like a happy ending, Linda! My favorite line: "Then Joy returned in two large hands"—such a warm and secure place to be!

  5. Thanks for sharing, Michelle, and for everyone's comments. It "is" a made-up story, but with some truth after seeing a trash truck with a teddy bear on its dash. It was sad to imagine how & why, until the further ending.

  7. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, it's got all the right feels. LOVE it. I can just imagine a teddy bear salvaged and treated right. What a story you have. Now all you need are illustrations.

  8. I was wondering if Joy was hanging out with the trash men in that Teddy. Love the way you wove this poem together.

  9. Linda, our recycling folks who handle the trash mess we give uniformly greet me with a smile when we speak on my walk, now with this lovely poem, I'm surprised I haven't seen a teddy bear or something similar on their dash. Joy is fleeting as your narrator here lets us know, but when Joy rebounds back, she can be unexpectedly sweeter.
