DMC: "A Friend" by Kristi Dee Veitenheimer
A Friend
Mama scolded me this morning.
I got syrup in my pigtails,
but I didn’t mean to.
Now I can’t have syrup
anymore.
Teacher punished me this morning.
I was eating paste,
but it was just a little.
Now I can’t use paste
anymore.
Penny ignored me this morning.
She always plays with me at recess,
but she said I couldn’t.
I don’t belong in the club
anymore.
You sat beside me on the steps this morning.
I was sad and alone,
but you put your arm around my shoulders.
And I don't feel so bad
anymore.

Thank goodness for a kind arm around the shoulders! Very nice voice in this poem.
ReplyDeleteGentle kindnesses are the best kind! I agree with Tabatha– the voice rings true. Thanks, Kristi.
ReplyDeleteI wish this would happen for everyone. You've shown us what a little kindness can do.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have a talk with that Penny! LOL! Great poem, Kristi. I, too, agree—you certainly captured the voice.
ReplyDeleteThat is a sweet poem. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your kind words!
ReplyDeleteOh, Kristi, I ached for the little child until the arm hug came along on the steps.
ReplyDeleteThis is a poetic reminder that one little soft touch can mend prickly people's barbs.
