DMC: "Those Letters That Curl" by Linda Baie

THOSE LETTERS THAT CURL

My granddaughter speaks of school—
favorite activity:
where she can write her stories,

and now use “fancy letters,
the ones with curls at the end.
They make the stories lively.”

She’ll write about her days, put
those she loves into the words,
practicing fancy letters.

Jane Yolen has challenged us to write a septercet that features reading or writing this month. What is a septercet?  Click HERE for more details.

Post your poem on our September 2016 padlet. All contributions will be included in a wrap-up celebration on Friday, September 30th, and one lucky participant will win a personalized copy of her fabulous new collection of science poetry:

  4. Thank you for sharing this, Michelle, a nice surprise! The words are straight from Ingrid. Second graders celebrate things we've forgotten!

  10. This is lovely. I gave up on fancy letters long ago. My fancy was more like messy.

  13. I worry about those letters that curl not being taught anymore. My own son used to hand me his grandmother's letters (written in cursive) and ask me to read them to him. Lively stories, fancy letter, curls at the end - tell Ingrid that her fancy letters quote makes me smile. I hope to participate this month in the challenge.

  14. Oh, Linda! Appreciations for bringing back a memory of the joy
of graduating to flowing cursive letters. I see where your grandchild
has naturally inherited a poet's voice from you.
I love your tribute to your granddaughter & I love this sweet poem.

  15. Thanks again, everyone. I asked Ingrid again what was going on with the curly letters. They're practicing every day, she says, so, so exciting!

  16. I imagine your granddaughter must be something like "Fancy Nancy" who loves her fancy words.
