DMC: "Writing is" by Margaret Simon
WRITING IS
Writing is
hearing the birds
wake up the morning.
Writing is
the time between sleeping and waking
hypnagogic, semi-dreamy.
Writing is
a butterfly emerging
then flying quickly away.
Writing is
hosta poking through the soil
announcing spring’s arrival.
Writing is
elusive
and present—
time changing time.

Click HERE to read this month's interview with Melissa Manlove, Senior Editor at Chronicle Books. Her DMC challenge is to write a poem that explores how writing (or a book) is like something else.
Post your poem on our May 2017 padlet. While some contributions will be featured as daily ditties this month, all contributions will be included in a wrap-up celebration on Friday, May 26th. Two lucky participants will win a book published by Chronicle earlier this year: LOVING VS. VIRGINIA by Patricia Hruby Powell, illustrated by Shadra Strickland, or LOVE IS by Diane Adams, illustrated by Claire Keane.
Writing has been VERY elusive for me lately...Very nice, Margaret!
ReplyDeleteWonderful disruptions Margaret I agree writing is like spring
ReplyDeleteI expect this will be an insightful month of poetry! Thank you for starting things off so beautifully, Margaret. I love how you've capture the elusive nature of writing— grab those muse-touched moments while you can, because they come and go like dandelion fluff.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for featuring my poem today. This is one that practically wrote itself, a gift to you and me. Being first is not so bad. Look forward to seeing what others share.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Margaret! hypnagogic is a cool word!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous.....so earthy....which is what I want writing to be for me. Love every word. And, I agree with Diane...hypnagogic--wow!
ReplyDeleteOf all the things that's wonderful in writing, it is nature, and you've shown that beautifully, Margaret. Writing is "a butterfly emerging/ then flying quickly away" is a perfect image of both the grand feelings of inspiration, then the challenge to keep discovering it. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it just. A lovely poem.
ReplyDeleteLovely and lively poem Margaret, I especially like your ending:
ReplyDelete"Writing is
elusive
and present—
time changing time."
