DMC: "Umbrella" by Elizabeth Steinglass
UMBRELLA
Rain comes.
(It always does.)
You worry your plans
are ruined
like a soggy
piece of paper.
Raise me
over your head.
I will be your shelter
as you go on.
I will turn the rain
into song.

This is gorgeous....a delight to the eye and ear and imagination. Well done!
ReplyDeletePerfect for us today; we woke up to rain! I like "a soggy piece of paper"! It's a clever idea of a place of refuge, LIz!
ReplyDeleteI love the paper line and turn the rain into song makes me wont to go out walking in the rain love that you wrote it as if the umbrella was telling the poem Wonderful and fun :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I think you get the award for most clever place of refuge and solace, Liz! This poem reminds me of the clear plastic "bubble" umbrella I had when I was little and more than a few happy dances in the rain.
ReplyDeleteI would take your small corner of refuge even on a sunny day! Also liked the rhythm in your poem Liz, thanks.
ReplyDeleteTerrific. I love turning the rain into a song. Thanks, Liz, for such great imagery.
ReplyDeleteLovely images and sounds--especially turning the rain into song.
ReplyDeleteThank you, everyone! I think I wrote this because I needed a little shelter myself.
ReplyDeleteLove everything about this poem, Liz! Something magical about an umbrella - I pop mine open at the mere hint of rain. I always want to hear the song. =)
ReplyDeleteI had to go out in the rain for Thanksgiving Day shopping. Wish I had had this poem singing in my head.
