DMC: "Look What I Did" by Karen Eastlund

LOOK WHAT I DID

Scribble fits, wiggle blitz
The anguish a sigh emits
Scratch outs and smudges
The pencil point’s lame

Letters sway to and fro
Nothing stands in a row
But look at his face aglow
He just wrote his name

Click HERE to read this month's interview with Carol Hinz, Editorial Director of Millbrook Press and Carolrhoda Books, divisions of Lerner Publishing Group. Her challenge this month is to write a poem that finds beauty in something that is not usually considered beautiful.

Post your poems on our November 2017 padlet. While some contributions will be featured as daily ditties this month, all contributions will be included in a wrap-up celebration this Friday, November 24th. One lucky participant will win a copy of The Sun Played Hide-and-Seek: A Personification Story by Brian P. Cleary, illustrated by Carol Crimmins, and published by Millbrook Press earlier this year.

  1. I still have their first attempts at writing names in a shoebox in my closet. My six beautiful girls.. now grown and just as determined to succeed now as they were way back then. Thanks for the memories!

  2. :) So perfect--a kid's excitement when writing something as important as a name for the first time is heartbreakingly sweet!

  4. That 'wiggle blitz' is one picture I've seen, Karen. Beauty seen by those who know the young ones! Terrific!

  6. Thanks everyone, for your comments. I actually have a picture of a 4-year-old student who just wrote his name... didn't feel I could use it as I don't have permission, but it is priceless. Yes... I've saved first attempts also. I love their early letters... E's with five arms, all wiggly like eels. It is a wonder.
