DMC: "Confidence" by Michelle H. Barnes

"Confidence" by Nathan van Elden

I've been having such fun this week exploring personified feelings!

Apparently, I'm not the only one. Either Jeannine Atkins came up with a fantastic DMC challenge or y'all missed me more than I realized. I'm guessing it's the former, though maybe a little of both?

In only seven days, we've gathered fourteen poems on our February 2017 padlet. Four of them have been posted as daily ditties: Cindy Breedlove's Concern, Sherry Howard's Fear, Linda Mitchell's Resolute, and Tabatha Yeatts's Creative Voice.

The first feeling I explored this week, Ennui, led to an unfortunate suicide (poor thing), so I decided to give Confidence a go instead.

Confidence

the elvish imp,
will not be leashed
like some pointy-eared pup.
With a wiggle and woot,

she’ll slip
        your grip
and streak naked through the streets
just as fast as her little legs can scamper.

"Millie" by Andrea Janda

Post your poem that uses personified feeling anytime this month. For more details about the challenge, read my interview with Jeannine Atkins HERE.

All contributions will be included in a wrap-up celebration on Friday, February 24th, and one lucky participant will win a personalized copy of Jeannine Atkins's latest novel-in-verse from Atheneum Books/Simon & Schuster, Stone Mirrors: The Sculpture and Silence of Edmonia Lewis.

Find this week's Poetry Friday roundup at The Logonauts. Thanks, Katie!

  1. A great little ditty, Michelle, written with great confidence and with a wiggle and woot, I'm sure!

I've started two or three times, but it fizzled out. Fortunately, there's still a few more weeks left, so I may post something yet.

  4. Watch out for that "elvish imp." Reminds me a bit of Valentines Day that's just around the corner . . . She sure has some powerful Confidence, as does your ditty!

  5. What an adorable little imp! Oh yes, those wiggly little ones just won't be tamed, and isn't that just the most wonderful thing? :-)

  6. Oh that little scampering Confidence! Thank you, Michelle (and Jeannine!). xo

  8. Love the personification of Confidence!

  9. Wonderful to hear about the responses to the challenge. I like the impishness of your Confidence -- mine is different, but also eludes the leash, and is fond of hiding.

  10. That's confidence, all right...just because one is elvish doesn't mean they don't have gusto!

  11. Adorable poem, Michelle. Can't resist that elvish imp.

  13. Love this! Perfectly describes how I feel on a bold day--a little irreverently energetic. I like Matt's word--gusto!

  14. "Millie" is adorable, and your poem is too. Love "With a wiggle and a woot" !

  15. You really capture that streaky, unleashed confidence! I like that wooty wiggle, too.

  16. If only we could hold onto our wooty wiggle confidence beyond childhood...but without the naked streaking. LOL Great poem, Michelle! =)

  17. Your poem should keep your elvish imp at your side, Michelle--she can't streak away from you!

  18. Oh my! I love this because it reminds me of my daughters, all three full to overflowing with confidence, especially at toddler age.

  19. My confident guess is that the source for the fast reflections stem fro a bit of both, the inviting prompt by Jeanne Atkins + your Today's Lingering Delight (TLD not-so-alternate fact) hordes yearning to be back sashaying around.

Your "Confidence" is a wiley charmer, Michelle. You've got THE treasure trove!

I've fiddled with my entry, "Gratitude," but may also do another & expect to post the most potent personification by deadline day if I can coax one into shape. I'm not going to look at the padlet until I do post, but I bet there are many delights there, waiting.

  20. I just read the DMC challenge interview with Jeannine (interesting!) as well as your impish confidence poem - so fun!

  21. Ha! She does run fast, that little imp, Confidence. Wonderful and ditty like. I admit to miss TLD and being enthralled with the interview of Jeannine. Thanks for both. The padlet is so much fun. GREAT idea and contribution to poetry.

  22. Confidence is just plain charming. And I'm so glad you chose Confidence instead of Ennui, for I fear I would have been bored to death.

  23. That imp--I fear her middle name might be Pride! I'm going to go write Confidence too, because my image surprises me in being so different from yours. Nice to see you again, Michelle.

  24. Fun challenge. Loved the elfish Confidence - so playful! I tried my hand at it... I don't know if it is right, but it is an Acrostic personification of Comfortable.

  25. Yes, we missed you. But, yes, it's a great challenge. I'm watching what you and others come up with and pondering...

  27. It really never occurred to me that confidence would be so gleeful about abandoning us!

  28. Fabulous! I think you've captured CONFIDENCE beautifully. I picture her laughing at me as she leaves me sad and insecure!
